From round to square, from the original colourways to a sophisticated contrast between cream and black. The VELA project shows how a designer rug can be transformed into a personalised creation.
Large custom rugs: VELA, a fresh take on the contemporary living room.
Every room has its own character. Every client has their own vision.
When choosing large rugs for the living room, striking the right balance between size, shapes, colours and materials is essential to enhance the whole room.
It is precisely this need that gave rise to one of our latest residential projects.
The client approached Platinum Custom Rugs after spotting VELA in our catalogue – a rug from the INEDITA collection, characterised by a contemporary design featuring fluid, dynamic lines inspired by the movement of sails.
The original model, available in a round shape, had caught their eye. However, for their living room, they wanted something different: to retain the design’s identity whilst completely reinterpreting its shape and colours.
A request that perfectly embodies the Platinum philosophy: using the collection’s design as a starting point, never as a limit to creativity.
The customer’s request: to transform a round rug into a large square rug
The starting point for the project was the VELA model, which the client appreciated for its distinctive decorative pattern.
The VELA model in its original design.
The request involved two main customisations.
The first concerned the shape: the client did not want a round rug, as featured in the catalogue, but a square version that would suit their interior design vision.
The second concerned the colour palette. Rather than choosing one of the combinations available on the website, the client preferred to develop a personalised colour scheme, playing on the timeless contrast between cream and black.
The aim was to preserve the distinctive character of VELA, whilst creating a version different from the original, designed specifically for their living space.
Cream-coloured wool and black viscose: the value of textural contrast
A key aspect of the project was the choice of yarns.
Two materials were selected for the rug, each with a specific aesthetic function:
• Cream-coloured wool for the base: a natural fibre with a soft texture and a warm appearance, chosen to create a luminous and delicate surface.
• Black viscose for the design: a yarn with a characteristic sheen, used to enhance VELA’s decorative lines and create a striking contrast with the background.
The combination of these two fibres adds depth to the rug’s surface.
The wool lends a more matt, textured quality, whilst the viscose reacts to light with varying reflections, emphasising the movement of the design.
The result is a composition in which the contrast arises not only from the juxtaposition of colours, but also from the interplay between different textures.
Large living room rugs: when personalisation transforms the design
Choosing a large rug means introducing an element into the space that can profoundly influence its visual perception.
For this reason, shape and proportions should not be regarded as secondary features, but as an integral part of the interior design scheme.
In the case of VELA, the transition from a round to a square shape has made it possible to reinterpret the original design through a new surface.
The flowing lines, a distinctive feature of the design, thus meet a more regular shape, creating an interesting interplay between movement and geometry.
The choice of cream and black also helps to define the identity of this version: a neutral, luminous base provides the backdrop for a bold graphic pattern, transforming the rug into a decorative element with a strong personality.
It is not simply a matter of changing the colour or size of an existing product, but of adapting its aesthetic language to an individual vision.
The result: a VELA unlike any other
A new interpretation of VELA has emerged from a collection model, developed in line with the client’s preferences.
The square shape, the cream wool base and the black viscose design define a rug that retains the essence of the original design, yet takes on an identity of its own.
This case study illustrates what creating bespoke rugs means to us: offering the freedom to choose, modify and reinterpret every detail, without being constrained by the configurations featured in the catalogue.
Because a rug can be inspired by an existing design, yet become something entirely personal.
Your next rug starts with an idea. Yours.
