Catalog I CLASSICI collection Impero design Cesare
Giulio Cesare is one of the most brilliant and prestigious figures of ancient Rome, and for some even of the whole history.
Well beyond the important historical facts of which he was the protagonist, leaves traces that reach us, starting from the month of Julius, which we call so precisely by Julius. Cesare (Gaius Iulius Caesar) was born on the 12th (or 13th) of that month, at the time the fifth in the Roman calendar.
To him we owe the definition of the calendar – which was called “giuliano” – in 365 days with a leap year every four. Not only.
The term Caesar (read with a hard C, as K) becomes synonymous with emperor, surviving to the present times in the German Kaiser and the Russian Zar.
Considered the first emperor of Rome, Cesare made an extraordinary political and military parable, passing through every degree of command, but above all making the eternal city the transition from Republic to Empire, in the period of its greatest splendor.
Cesare led the armies to the conquest of distant territories, from Britain to Germany, in Spain, Greece and Egypt. In 49 BC, on his return from Gaul, he led his legions through the Rubicon, where he pronounced the famous words “alea iacta est” (the die is cast), because from there a civil war broke out, which ended with his triumph: Cesare became the undisputed leader of Rome.
His death was also extraordinary. In a conspiracy (not the only one against him), he was stabbed by 23 senators, including Bruto, his son.
They were the Ides of March (March 15) of 44 BC.
Since then the appellation of Cesare was adopted by several emperors and kings as an honorary title.
The Roman Empire model of inspiration
The history of this period speaks to us of magnificence, spectacular games with gladiators, palace intrigues and strategic double games.
An alternation of political alliances, but also arranged marriages and disowned wives, which is rather intricate to follow.
Thanks to rich artistic and literary sources, contemporary to the facts but also to later historians, this period remains an image of magnificence that has become the imperial model in the collective imagination of the West.
